Surkanda Devi Temple
Situated at an altitude of 10,000 feet, this temple is dedicated to goddess Sati. While many admire its beautiful architecture and scenic surroundings comprising of the Himalayan peaks, many pilgrims come every year to this place to pay homage to sati. It is one of the many shakti peeths scattered around the Indian subcontinent. According to the popular belief, these shakti peeths are the places where pieces of Sati’s body fell after she sacrificed herself in the yajna perpetrated by his father. If you have no intention to walk uphill to this shrine, there are ponies and porters available who will carry you to the destination.
Trek in the Kodia jungle
This 6 km trek walk includes greenery enriched forest, undulating hills and valleys, and natural springs. If you are lucky, you will also be able to spot wild animals such as Musk Deer, Kakar, Ghoral, and Wild Boar. With the sounds of birds chirping and gurgling of the natural springs, this area is ideal for spending some peaceful and relaxing time. Start the trek in a narrow grimy road, and in the end, captivating views of the valley awaits you. Jeep safari is also available, but prior permission is required for the same. Also, it is an amazing picnic spot, so don’t forget to carry your lunch and snacks with you. The entry fee is Rs. 20 per person, and the opening time is 9 a.m.
Experience water sports in Tehri lake
It is an artificial water reservoir, and water from the Bagirathi river was used to fill up the dam. Also, it is the tallest dam in India. Since its construction, the place has become a popular tourist destination spot where you can either soak in its beauty with a lazy walk or indulge in water activities like jet skiing, motor boat, banana boat, surfing, and many more. There are plans to incorporate many aerial sports like hot air balloon and parachuting soon.

Although there is no particular market in Kanatal, you can go to Chamba, a nearby town in Kanatal that has a small market. From here, buy souvenirs like clothes made with nettle weed fabric and local handicrafts like baskets made with varieties of bamboo.

How to reach
By air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, located in Dehradun and is about 92 km away from Kanatal. Hop on to any of the many taxis available outside the airport to reach Kanatal.
By rail: The nearest railway station to Kanatal is in Dehradun and Rishikesh. Whereas Dehradun is about 85kms from your destination, Rishikesh is about 75 km. You will easily get a taxi or a bus from these locations. Moreover, Kanatal is well-connected with motorable roads from Rishikesh and Dehradun, and these are well-connected to the many major cities of India by rail.
By road: Kanatal is about a seven-hour drive from Delhi if you go via Haridwar and the Doon Valley. Take a bus to Mussoorie from Delhi from where you can reach Kanatal passing Dhanolti.
The best time to visit
It is ideal for visiting during summertime when the temperature ranges from 10-20 degrees Celsius. The temperature in the winter season drops as low as 5-10 degrees with heavy snowfall leading to blocked roads.
